Squadron 42 Gets Steam Page and 2027 Release Window

Cloud Imperium Games has launched a Steam page and a cinematic trailer for Squadron 42, scheduling the long-awaited single-player Star Citizen spinoff for a second-quarter 2027 release after delaying the project from late 2026 to avoid clashing with Grand Theft Auto 6.

Set in the year 2945, the story casts players as a rookie in the United Empire of Earth Navy aboard a massive capital ship as humanity faces outlaws and hostile alien forces.

The delay stemmed from a deliberate calculation regarding the industry release calendar, specifically the impending launch of Grand Theft Auto 6.

“At CitizenCon 2024, we announced we would ship in 2026. Our plan was to release in Q4 around IAE, but much like the rest of the industry there is no way I want to launch my spiritual successor to Wing Commander, a game that has had 12 years of blood, sweat and tears invested into it […] launching into the attention buzz saw of GTA 6.”

Veterans of MMORPGs will recall that Star Citizen started via Kickstarter back in 2012 by raising more than $2M, targeting a 2014 debut. Originally announced in 2012, Squadron 42 has spent nearly 14 years in development and was originally a co-op campaign attached to Star Citizen before being split off into its own product. Its presence on Steam is notable because it provides PC users—including those who have never backed Star Citizen’s crowdfunding campaigns—an alternative method to buy the title. Until now, Star Citizen and its playable modules have only been accessible from Roberts Space Industries launcher.

A Star-Studded Cast and Cinematic Gameplay in the Star Citizen Universe

The project features an ensemble cast captured through full performance technology. The roster includes Mark Hamill, Henry Cavill, Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson, and Ben Mendelsohn, alongside Andy Serkis, John Rhys-Davies, Jonathan Bailey, Mark Strong, Damson Idris, Liam Cunningham, Jane Perry, and Alix Wilton Regan.

Ian Duncan, widely recognized for his role as Todd Todmore in the BBC comedy Broken News, portrays the male protagonist, while seasoned video game performer Alix Wilton Regan voices the female protagonist. Squadron 42 features an A-list cast.

The narrative unfolds through a mixture of interactive cinematic sequences and hands-on mechanics.

“Enlist as a rookie in the UEE Navy and step into a cinematic, single-player space adventure where you are at the center of the action. Live, work, and fight alongside your crew, brought to life by an all-star cast, as the story unfolds across fighter cockpits, capital ships, space stations, frontier outposts, and the front lines of a galactic war.”

The newly published Steam store page details hardware specifications for players planning to install the 150GB game. Minimum requirements include Windows 11, a 64-bit processor, 16GB of RAM, and a DirectX 11.1-compatible graphics card with 8GB of VRAM alongside DirectX 12 support.

Arrives as a Separate Narrative-Driven Product

While mainline multiplayer component Star Citizen remains in an incomplete alpha state despite crossing $1 billion in cumulative crowdfunding in May, Squadron 42 arrives as a separate narrative-driven product running on the proprietary StarEngine framework. This financial threshold was crossed concurrently with the rollout of a $5000 (£3700) vessel known as the Anvil Odin capital ship, a vehicle that debuted for purchase as a limited vehicle concept pledge without any confirmed launch date. The studio opened Steam wishlists following the trailer drop, with the second quarter of 2027 targeted for the final launch.
