Barbara Barrie, Oscar-Nominated Actress, Dies at 95

Barbara Barrie, the Oscar-nominated actor known for Breaking Away, died Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at her Manhattan home. She was 95. Her death was medically assisted under New York’s Medical Aid in Dying law, which had taken effect 12 weeks earlier and which she supported, her agent said.

Her daughter, Jane Harnick, told The New York Times that Barrie died at her Manhattan home following a terminal cancer diagnosis. The sources do not name the type of cancer or say when she was diagnosed.

What her daughter and agent said about the death

Her agent, Gary Gersh, confirmed the manner of death to USA Today on October 28 and to NBC News on Thursday. He said her passing was medically assisted in accordance with the New York State Medical Aid in Dying law, of which she was a proponent and advocate.

Harnick told NBC News in a phone interview that her mother had long advocated for the right to die on your own terms.

Her whole life, even before she was ill with anything, she always said, ‘When the time comes, I want to just take something and go to sleep.’ She used to talk about that.

Harnick said the law’s August start was perfect timing because her mother did not want to get to the point of having us watch her suffer, and that the family supported the decision 100%. She said Barrie considered it important that people be able to discuss medically assisted deaths without judgment.

What New York’s law allows, and since when

Gov. Kathy Hochul signed the law on February 6, 2026, and it took effect August 5, 2026, according to a legal summary of New York’s Medical Aid in Dying Act. It lets adult residents with decision-making capacity and a medically confirmed terminal illness expected to cause death within six months request prescribed medication that they can take themselves.

Safeguards include assessments by two physicians and a separate mental health evaluation. Patients must be told about alternatives such as hospice and palliative care, and they may withdraw the request or decline to take the medication. The sources do not say when Barrie applied or what steps she followed.

Earlier illnesses she discussed in public

In September 2014, Barrie disclosed that she had idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a chronic, incurable lung disease, Playbill reported. In a statement at the time she said, I am living full steam ahead and am now trying to help other people do the same. That statement concerned her lung disease.
