One month after the death of musician and philanthropist Dolly Parton, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is expanding its operations in the United Kingdom. According to the Dollywood Foundation, the literacy initiative is doubling its footprint across London, bringing monthly book deliveries to an additional 157,000 children.

The growth in London is being sponsored by the Postcode Lottery, a charity lottery operating across the U.K. Clara Govier, managing director of the Postcode Lottery U.K., stated that Parton understood the extraordinary power of something very simple involving a child, a grown-up, and a book.

Jeff Conyers, president of the Dollywood Foundation, noted that Parton would have been incredibly proud to witness the initiative continuing to scale up internationally after her passing. She built things that could keep doing good in the world,
Conyers stated, adding that leadership’s current responsibility is to care for what she entrusted to them. Conyers also confirmed that additional program expansions remain in development.
Origins and Global Growth of the Imagination Library
Parton established the Dollywood Foundation in 1988, followed by the creation of the Imagination Library in 1995. She launched the organization in eastern Tennessee in honor of her father, who could not read or write, with the initial goal of providing literature and fostering a passion for reading among youngsters in her native county of Sevier County.
The program mails a free, age-appropriate book every month to children from birth until their fifth birthday to make books more accessible and encourage families to read together. Over more than three decades, the worldwide book-gifting initiative has distributed more than 330 million books to over 3 million children. Its global reach spans across all 50 U.S. states, Canada, Australia, Ireland, and the United Kingdom.

Research evaluating the effects of the Imagination Library indicates that youths who obtained the volumes experienced increased rates of being read to and exhibited a higher count of developing literacy capabilities. The motion for the plaque was lodged by SNP councillor Audrey Doig and seconded by Provost Lorraine Cameron to recognize the singer's innovative literacy initiative, which has brought benefits to children in Renfrewshire. The local authority also agreed that a formal Dolly Parton Day will be marked annually, with council buildings lit pink each year for the occasion.
