Hong Kong: no to bail for Apple Daily executives

by admin

The Hong Kong court denied bail to Ryan Law Wai-kwong and Cheung Kim-hung, respectively director and chief executive of the pro-democracy tabloid Apple Daily. The two executives of the Hong Kong newspaper, arrested Thursday, were charged with collusion with foreign forces, one of the crimes introduced by the national security law in the city imposed last year by Beijing.

The law provides for penalties of up to life imprisonment for crimes of secession, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign forces. It is the first time that, under the new law, political opinions published by a news organization of the former British colony have been pursued.
