Two avalanches on the Sentinella pass, a skier injured

by admin

The young man, a 28-year-old Venetian, was dragged by the snow for 300 meters, but got away with some trauma. Alarm for tomorrow, when the avalanche risk will rise to 3 on a scale of 5

COMELICO. Venetian ski mountaineer injured by an avalanche fall. After the intervention on the Tofana di Rozes, another alarm went off at 10.40 on Saturday 8 May, due to an avalanche on the Sentinella Pass, where the Pelikan of Bolzano was sent and where the Air Service Center helicopter immediately brought the canine unit of the Sagf that had finished operating in Cortina, to then arrange for the transport of a team from Val Comelico and the Sagf to altitude.

While climbing on skis and skins along a canal, CB, 28, from Venice, had probably created a small gap on the surface that had caused him to lose his balance. The ski mountaineer then fell and was dragged by the snow for about 300 meters, without ending up under. With a leg injury and possible trauma, the skier was medicated and recovered by the crew, then flown to the hospital in Brunico. The rescuers then completed the remediation of the avalanche and excluded there were other people. While they were completing the operations, another large avalanche broke out in a nearby canal and after a quick check the rescuers quickly moved away.

Given the particular conditions of this spring, with still large amounts of snow at high altitude and high temperatures, other avalanches, including spontaneous ones, are expected to fall.

Arpav alert. The milder temperatures of the last few hours have created the instability of the snowpack. And tomorrow (Sunday 9 May) it will be worse, as the avalanche risk level will drop from 2 out of 5 to 3 out of 5, with the advice to avoid the practice of ski mountaineering in the gullies and on other steep slopes.
