A new study by the US government found that the COVID-19 virus may have spread at a low level in the United States as early as December 2019, a few weeks before the first case was officially confirmed on January 19, 2020 in the United States.
The latest study was published in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases on Tuesday. The National Institutes of Health team analyzed more than 24,000 blood samples collected in the United States in the first three months of 2020. They found that in 5 states including Massachusetts, antibodies to the COVID-19 virus were detected in at least 9 samples, earlier than their state reported the first case.
In one case, on January 7, 2020, a blood donor in Illinois showed positive antibodies. Since antibodies take an average of 14 days to produce, it is estimated that the virus may have appeared in Illinois as early as December 24, 2019.
However, since there are no travel records of relevant personnel in the report, it is not known whether they have ever been to China.
This survey is the largest of its kind in the United States, but it is not the only one. In December last year, scientists from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also analyzed 7,000 blood samples donated by the American Red Cross and found that 39 samples had antibodies in mid-December 2019.
Xiaoxu, what problems do these studies show? Does it mean that the virus appeared and spread in the United States as early as December 2019? (Can you perform gene sequencing based on these blood samples to determine the gene family tree?)
Xiaoxu: In February, the members of the first phase of the WHO investigation team said that they also urged the CCP to conduct more extensive testing of blood samples collected around Hubei in the fall of 2019. However, some departments of the CCP said, “They have not yet obtained permission. To test the samples in the blood bank.”
However, Liang Wannian, the head of the epidemic expert group of the Chinese Communist Party’s Health Commission, announced in February this year that they had carried out antibody tests on blood samples and found no evidence that the virus had spread around Wuhan before early December 2019. So whether it’s tested or not?
Xiaoxu: If the CCP does not test, but the United States continues to test blood samples at an earlier stage, is it possible to further advance the timeline of the outbreak in the United States? To some extent, who is more proactive and who is more transparent, but it seems to be more disadvantageous? Is it also one of the reasons why the outside world is now forcing the CCP to cooperate with the second phase of the investigation?

The performance of the CCP during the epidemic has aroused a collective rebound in Western countries. At the just-concluded summit of the Organization of the Seven Major Industrial Countries, the CCP clearly requested the World Health Organization to lead the second round of “transparent” investigations. At the same time, the Group of Seven countries has rarely named the CCP many times, raising concerns about the CCP’s undermining of international order and commitments in Xinjiang, Hong Kong, and the Taiwan Strait.
Immediately afterwards, NATO also convened a summit, and subsequently listed the CCP as a “systemic threat” in the communiqué for the first time. The communiqué stated that the CCP’s “open ambitions and overconfident behavior constitute a systemic threat to the rules-based international order and the security-related fields of the alliance.”
NATO and the Group of Seven countries one after another named the CCP’s challenge to the international order. For these two organizations, directly naming the CCP is an unprecedented move. Some people say that these two communiqués are equivalent to the declarations of Western democracies to “encircle the CCP”, symbolizing that the World League for Democracy has been formed; but some people say that their language is not so strong, there are many internal differences, and how much action is lacking in the next step. Very optimistic.

Before the summit, Putin said in an interview with the National Broadcasting Corporation that “Russia-China relations have reached an unprecedented high level, and Russia is satisfied.” Russia “does not think” the CCP is a threat. Putin also said, “Someone is trying to sabotage Russia-China relations.” After Putin’s remarks, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Communist Party of China responded on June 15 and said that it highly appreciates it and the Sino-Russian friendship is unbreakable.
