He was 58 and had been struggling with a neurodegenerative disease for a long time. In 2019 he received the prestigious Esmo award for his studies in the fight against cancer, the first Italian to obtain the recognition

Mourning in the international scientific community and in Tuscan and Prato healthcare. Dr. Angelo Di Leo, luminary of oncology and until a few months ago director of the oncology center of Santo Stefano, has died, which he brought to very high levels. He died tonight, June 13, in his house in Carmignano. He was 58 and had been struggling with a neurodegenerative disease for a long time. He leaves his wife, the oncologist Laura Biganzoli who was recently appointed to lead the department in place of her husband, who became the company coordinator for the development of clinical research programs.

In the autumn of 2019, the international scientific community awarded Di Leo the Esmo- European Society for Medical Oncology for “Having significantly contributed to the development of personalized therapies for breast cancer”. He was the first Italian to receive the prestigious award.

From today, scientific research and clinical practice in the world oncology field lose a great point of reference. It is consoling to know that the many young doctors and researchers of his team will carry on the work with the rigor, dedication and humanity that have always distinguished him and that he managed to pass on to those around him.

“A highly intelligent professional – the ASL Toscana Centro reminds him – who has represented an authoritative point of reference in the oncology field to which he has dedicated his life. Always attentive to the news in clinical research, he is constantly committed to improving and offering patients the best possible treatment and has established, over the years, important collaborations with national and international institutions. For Di Leo, research has always been a fundamental function for the development of scientific knowledge, and has represented an element of quality in support”.
