Israel, the former head of the Mossad recounts the attack on the Iranian nuclear power plant in Natanz: “The explosive hidden in the marble for the foundations”

Israel and Iran are not two countries formally at war, but war is the modality of relations between Israel and Iran: sabotage of nuclear power plants, targeted killings of scientists and military leaders by Israel, hijackings of ships, attacks in the Gulf of Hormuz from the Iranian front. It is a shadow war, of deterrence, and the principle that prevents it from exploding in an open conflict is the absence of certain proofs, no claims. So yesterday the interview that Yossi Cohen, until less than 10 days ago the head of the Mossad, gave the investigative journalist Ilana Dayan of the public television Channel 12 surprised many by agreeing to discuss a series of Israeli operations against Iran with a unprecedented level of detail for a former intelligence chief.

Cohen first spoke of the two attacks on Natanz, the uranium enrichment site that is at the center of the Iranian nuclear program and which was hit twice, in July 2020 and April 2021: the first blow destroyed a group of next-generation centrifuges, the second the underground room that was designed to protect them from attack. Cohen did not directly claim the attacks, but when the interviewer asked him where he would take her if they could travel he replied in the “basement” of Natanz, where “the centrifuges used run” which no longer looks ” he had before ”, confirming that he had exact knowledge of what happened inside. Journalist Dayan played the game, adding details to the reconstruction and describing off-screen how Israel introduced the explosives: “The man who was responsible for these explosions, it seems clear, made sure to provide the Iranians with the foundation. of marble on which the centrifuges are placed. ”The Iranians did not know that marble“ already had an enormous quantity of explosives inside ”.

Dayan and Cohen also talked about the killing of scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, the father of the Iranian military nuclear program, shot dead while traveling from Damavand to Tehran with his wife and escort on November 27, 2020. Again, she was the journalist. as a shoulder to the former head of the Mossad, introducing the segment of the interview, he presented Cohen as the man who “personally signed the entire campaign” to sabotage the Iranian nuclear program, which Tehran has always denied is for military purposes , for the development of the bomb. What Cohen was more explicit about is the operation with which in 2018 Israel managed to steal a series of confidential documents on the Iranian nuclear program in which the name of Fakhrizadeh appeared and which confirmed the existence of an active nuclear military program at least until 2003. The operation involved 20 agents but no Israelis, who scanned the material and passed it on to the Mossad before it was physically taken out of Iran.

In Israel, all statements, interviews or documents concerning national security have to go through military censorship, which means that Cohen’s interview has also been approved. Why? The hypothesis of the most attentive observers is that Israel wanted to send a message to Iran and to the powers that are negotiating in Vienna to revive the 2015 agreement: the Iranian nuclear program is a red line.
