BERLIN – On the eve, the polls in Saxony-Anhalt had become such a head-to-head between the CDU and the ultra-right AFD that it distressed the whole of Germany: a week ago both fluctuated around 26%. However, the land of the Protestant Reformation and the Bauhaus, of the hastily dismantled industries of East Germany and of a violent depopulation after the fall of the Wall, has dramatically denied the forecasts.
