Biden arrived with First Lady Jill and was greeted by the British Prime Minister and his wife Carrie. The four enjoyed the view over the Bay of St. Ives and then set off towards the building where the bilateral is held.

The meeting will focus on relaunching the privileged relationship between Great Britain and the US in the aftermath of Brexit and pandemic restrictions: we want to create a new Atlantic Charter, inspired by the one signed by their predecessors Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Winston Churchill.

In the face to face, we will certainly also talk about Northern Ireland, a fundamental piece of peaceful coexistence in the old continent.

Biden, of Irish origin and an opponent of Brexit, will push so that Great Britain – engaged in a difficult negotiation with the EU – does not jeopardize the so-called Good Friday agreement which has guaranteed peaceful coexistence on the island for many years.

“We have something in common: we both married women of superior status”: it began with a joking exchange on wives on a bilateral basis between the US President, Joe Biden, and the British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson. To the joke of the head of the White House, Johnson answered slyly, just fresh from his third marriage: “I’m not going to disagree. I don’t disagree but I don’t disagree about anything else either.”

Premier Johnson gave Biden a framed photo, depicting a mural of Frederick Douglass, a former slave who became a prominent figure in the abolition of slavery movement. First lady Jill Biden was honored with the first edition of the book The Apple Tree: A Short Novel and Several Long Stories by the British writer and poet Daphne du Maurier’s. Downing Street has made it known that the choice fell on the writer in particular for her links with Cornwall, a land that has inspired many of her stories.

The look sported by the American first lady, Jill Biden, wore a dark jacket over the dress with the words ‘Love’ aroused the curiosity of reporters. To journalists who asked her why she chose this, the first lady replied: “I think we are bringing love from America”. “We are trying to bring unity to the world – he explained – and I hope that people will feel a sense of hope after this year of pandemic”.
