A ransom of 500,000 dollars would have been asked for the release of the Italian engineer Vanni Calì, kidnapped yesterday in Haiti. It is learned from sources that follow the story.

A member of the armed group that yesterday around 10 am local time kidnapped the Italian engineer of Bonifiche Spa and one of his Haitian collaborators, would have contacted the local partner of Calì, referring to the payment of a ransom, even if without making specific requests, but still expressing threats to the safety of the hostages. A second phone call, with a more specific request, would reach the family.
According to sources from beraking latest news, the engineer would need drugs, an element that makes it even more necessary to speed up the phases of his release, which is being worked hard. Among other elements, the use of a mediator who can establish contact with the group of kidnappers is evaluated, a strategy that would be the one recommended by the authorities of Port au Prince.

Giovanni “Vanni” Calì emigrated to Haiti in 2017 and although he was already retired he embarked on a collaboration with Bonifica spa, world leader in road construction abroad with two offices: one in Geneva and one in Rome. And even during an inspection he was surprised by the kidnappers. Calì’s family, wife and children, live in Sant’Agata di Battiati, in the province of Catania.
