Botswana, 1,098 carat diamond found: the third largest in the world

by admin

A Botswana company has announced the discovery of a 1,098-carat diamond, the third largest diamond in the world found so far. The precious stone, the Debswana company specifies, was found on June 1st and shown to the country’s president, Mokgweetsi Masisi.

Debswana is controlled by the government and South African diamond giant De Beers. “This discovery gives hope to a struggling nation,” said company director Lynette Armstrong. The largest diamond in the world is the “Cullinan”: discovered in South Africa in 1905, it exceeds 3,100 carats. The second, 1,109 carat, was discovered in 2015 in a mine in North East Botswana, which is the world‘s leading diamond producer.
