Coach Fontana, goodbye without rancor: “With Broni 5 fantastic years”

by admin

The coach, bronese doc, not confirmed by the green-and-white club after his salvation. “The victory over Venice and the final eight of the Cup are the most exciting moments”

BRONI. «It has been an unforgettable 5 years, a pride for me». So coach Alessandro Fontana greets Pf Broni 93, after two seasons as an assistant and from April 2018 until the last A1 championship as head coach. Now the Oltrepadana club has made a different choice (the name of the new coach could already arrive in the next few hours, according to some indiscretions) and Fontana, bronese doc, born in 1984, will look around to find accommodation, perhaps in a noble club, both male and female, because in any case he has shown that he has high-profile skills and competences.

From the Academy to the first team

But now there is room for memories: «In the two years as an assistant I have concentrated on the reopening of the youth sector, which now bears the name of the Broni basketball Academy. – Fontana says – We have reached to have about a hundred girls and various collaborations with realities in the area. I had always followed the events of the first team, as a fan, but getting closer as an assistant allowed me to learn more about the psychological aspect and the approach to women’s basketball, so they were two important years ». Then came the proposal to become head coach: «Even today I feel the thrill, when I think back to the offer to be able to lead the team of my hometown: the dream of anyone who does my job. I think I really gave it my all. There are many pleasant memories, starting from the first year’s ride that filled our fans with pride: I think of the victories with San Martino, which gave us the certainty of being on the right track, in Lucca after an extra period, where we never had won, and then the success against Venice, which had reached the Brera undefeated after the first round. We were the first to beat it, recovering from less than 18. Without forgetting the mockery of the defeat in Game 3 in San Martino in the playoff quarters, when we cherished the dream of the semi-final championship. In addition to qualifying for the final eight of the Italian Cup ».

The two subsequent seasons less brilliant in terms of results, but still positive for coach Fontana: “In the second year, albeit with ups and downs, there is the icing of the victory in the derby in Sesto San Giovanni in December 2019, a success that was missing for a long time: I still remember the happiness of the fans in tow. Then Covid stopped everything. Starting this year was not easy. I want to remember in particular the challenge with Ragusa, when with the only Italians on the field and without even throwing a free throw in the 40 ‘we were able to remain hooked to a super team. We were unlucky in the two games against Empoli. If we had made a few more points we would have saved ourselves without the play out. But in the end we still reached the goal, despite the defeat in game 3 against Sassari hurt. I don’t want to talk about the worst memories, let’s say they served to improve us ». There is room for feelings: «I sincerely thank the fans who supported me and perhaps challenged me from day one, but for Broni’s sake. Also in these days I have received certificates of esteem. Thank you”.

The future? For now no offer: «I am still under contract for a year with Broni, but the company has chosen differently – he concludes – now I need to switch off for a moment, waiting to throw myself into a new adventure. It doesn’t matter if male or female, because basketball is always basketball. I am looking for a new and captivating challenge, in which I will always bring the good things I have learned to Broni ». –
