Sacred animals – Claudia Durastanti

by admin

In the brave years of marathon-like film reviews, courage prompted me to see the staging of the Requiem by Mozart shot by Aleksandr Sokurov. In the film, the director films the choir of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic in motion, alternating the shots with the faces of the audience whose ecstasy and torment we perceive.

Much has been written about Ira by Iosonouncane, and many sound references – the linguistic ones are part of a map that is constantly changing, a language that rewrites itself with each listening – have gone to cosmic music, to the inventions of the more orchestral Radioheads: I myself have cradled myself in this amniotic fluid of similarities. It was only after many moments of intimacy with Ira that I have thought back to Requiem of Sokurov and the cosmic journey has given way to sacred immersion.

Too often we entrust the idea of the sacred to the individual performer, and it is no coincidence that Giovanni Lindo Ferretti is the first name that becomes clear in the nebula of a frightening music. But sacred music is often based on the choir, on a harmonious and harrowing cooperation of intent and vision, and Ira it’s a record based on the choir.

It is one of its most beautiful qualities, both aesthetic and formal: in a moment in which we are trying to understand how to relieve the burden of self and narratives in the first person, a record arrives that sweeps away the codes of solitary travel and individual trip (rekindled by an ever less collective psychedelic renaissance) to make us feel animals, less dispersed and more connected, in a colossal herd.
