From The Barbarians to the Valley of the Temples, Gaetano Aronica’s theater finds another dimension

by admin

“I shudder to think that the Pirandello Theater is finally back to say something to people.”

Gaetano Aronica does not hide his emotion. After months of closure, in fact, the highest theater institution in Agrigento raises the curtain: “It moves, however, outdoors, to the Valley of the Temples”, adds the actor and director from Agrigento, who continues: “In this period we all want to go out to breathe deeply. Going to the temples, to enjoy the beauties of our land and also the beauties of our theater ».

A new stage, therefore, for Gaetano Aronica who, with the Compagnia del Teatro Pirandello, directs (together with Giovanni Volpe) a “crackling” show entitled “Veleni – Festino al tempo di Peste”, written “in one night ”And freely inspired by the works of Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin and Lucio Apuleio Madaura.

The show is produced by the Pirandello Theater Foundation of the Municipality of Agrigento, in collaboration with the Archaeological and Landscape Park of the Valley of the Temples.

So, the Pirandello Theater starts again?

People always asked me when we would start over. This sense of responsibility has never worried me, on the contrary it has given me great enthusiasm, to me and to the whole company that is ready to face the many adventures of this summer. It will be a beautiful summer, we have chosen an original show that through great metaphors also tells of today. The challenge of the Pirandello theater is to create a necessary theater. The show asks itself some very important questions.

The title is original. When was the idea born?

“The idea for this show was born in just one night. It is worth remembering the fable of that painter who, called by his king to paint him a portrait, after a year of hospitality at court, had not even attempted to start the work. One evening he was warned that the next morning the king would chase him away. The next day the painter came with the finished picture, of unimaginable beauty. The king asked him how he had created that masterpiece in one night and the painter replied that he had not created it in one night, but throughout the year, since he had thought of nothing else ”.

Does that kind of represent what happened with Poisons?

“After thinking for a long time on last year’s project, The Awakening of Humanity, which told, among other things, the story of Jesus and a tribe of free men in search of a new beginning through the heretical writers of ‘900, it seemed important to me to create a project with an equally powerful and evocative story that spoke to the people of today, drawing on the origins of humanity. Unfortunately, after this very hard year, in which moods are very different from those of last summer, in which there was a lot of confidence that the virus could be eradicated in a short time, a widespread sense of insecurity has instead increased “.

So, has the pandemic also affected your inspiration?

“I believe that this pandemic has turned the world upside down like a war, and that unfortunately, despite faith in the antidote, the consequences are not predictable. We have only one certainty: that everything has changed. We do not know if we are better or not, if in a moment in which life seems to be worth less, man is looking for its ultimate meaning for better or for worse. After having done research on pestilences, conflicts between peoples and the pursuit of happiness, it was chance that I came across a book I bought twenty-five years ago, which has illuminated my research and has become a precious creative source. The result is a very original story with flashes of surprising relevance, which I believe can concern everyone and lead us to question the eternal principles of good and evil that revolve around the seven deadly sins of Humanity “.

What is Veleni about?

“I found, in fact, in that memory the elements that could give unity of place, time and action to this story of great sins and small virtues: a banquet of survivors celebrating their self-isolation while the plague rages around. The key to the show is not tragic, but lively, musical and fun. The actions of men are not always noble, let alone their sins. Each of these stories set in the frame of a feast in time of plague, tells of illustrious and less illustrious people and their deadly sins “.

Who will be on stage?

“There will be actors, musicians and singers, dances and spells, grotesque characters, braggart captains, crafty servants, diabolical women and candid girls. The story tells of poisons and feelings, of strong, uncontrollable passions, of a world that changes in a direction that is destiny but also the breaking latest news of a path that man has known within himself since he made his own destiny, going towards to inequalities, selfishness, power games, by accumulation, as if they were the values of a new world “.

What emotions did you feel when you restarted?

“The emotion is to have returned to look at the Valley of the Temples after a year and to be crossed by an ambivalent feeling. On the one hand, that of having spent a very long year that seemed to have no outlet, on the other, looking at the Temples, looking at the sea from Agrigento, it seems to me that time has never passed “.
