UN, despite a decline in the area occupied by coca plantations
(ANSA) – BOGOTA, June 10 – Colombia in 2020 reduced the area of its territory occupied by coca plantations by 7%, but it remained the main cocaine producing nation in the world: this is what emerges from a report by the Nations Unite released yesterday.
According to the study published by the United Nations Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention (UNODC), last year the country had 143,000 hectares of illegal coca plantations compared to 154,000 hectares in 2019.
However, “cocaine production continued to grow,” commented UNODC representative Pierre Lapaque, with higher yields of coca leaves despite the shrinking surface. Colombia has thus managed to maintain its primacy as the main cocaine producing country ahead of Peru and Bolivia.
Last year, 1,228 tons of cocaine hydrochlorate were produced in the country, 8% more than in 2019. (ANSA).
