PALERMO – Ismett is confirmed in the first places in Italy for the treatment of malignant tumors of the liver and pancreas: this is what emerges from the data of Agenas (the national agency for regional health services that deals with monitoring and evaluation) on indicators of quality for these sectors of surgery.
Ismett carries out a total of 30% of all surgical procedures performed in Sicily for these pathologies, with a very low surgical mortality thirty days after surgery: in particular in the three-year period 2017-19 for the resective surgery of malignant liver tumors it stands at 0.63% and 0% for the pancreas.
“For the surgery of malignant liver tumors these data transferred nationally say that only 3.7 of the 373 Italian facilities where this surgery is performed have had more interventions than our center – explains Professor Salvatore Gruttadauria, director of the Department of Surgery. ISMETT Abdominal – Furthermore, the mortality thirty days after liver resection surgery for the three-year period 2017-2019 at our facility is 0.63% compared to the average center mortality for the entire nation which was found to be 2.28 %. These results place Ismett in third place among the 49 Italian centers evaluated by Agenas ».
Excellent results also as regards the treatment of malignant tumors of the pancreas. In the period 2017-2019, Ismett hospitalized 53 people, none of whom died at 30 days for which the mortality estimate is 0%. The nationwide median center mortality was 5.22%. Finally, 1,400 liver resections were performed overall in ISMETT. With an average – in the last three years – of over one hundred resections a year. The total pancreatic resections are 563, with an average of over 50 operations per year in the last two years. Interventions of this type are possible thanks to the activity of multidisciplinary teams.
The Liver Unit and the Pancreas Unit of ISMETT are made up of teams that include, in addition to surgeons, anesthetists, resuscitators, gastroenterologists, hepatologists, endoscopists, radiologists, infectious specialists, physiotherapists and quality control, who use all the experience and professionalism gained in over 20 years of activity and which have made ISMETT an international reference center for the care of patients with terminal organ failure with over 2500 organ transplants performed.
“The excellence of ISMETT for the treatment of hepatobiliopancreatic tumors – underlines Gruttadauria – is testified by the clinical results that are constantly compared with those obtained by colleagues at the UPMC medical center in the United States and by the positioning among the top ten Italian centers ( out of 60 surveyed) by number of liver resections performed with the minimally invasive – laparoscopic technique, as reported by the reports of the Italian register for minimally invasive liver surgery I Go Mils ».
Also based on the results obtained, in 2019 the Sicilian Region recognized the Institute as a Regional Reference Center for the treatment of this pathology.
