The spectacle of bees, environmental “spies” for waste disposal in the Marche region

by admin

BOLOGNA. Extraordinary creatures such as bees, an original biomonitoring project conceived by an environmental services company together with an important university, the most famous entomologist in Italy and two summer evenings in suggestive places in the Marche. These are the ingredients of the two events that Marche Multiservizi has decided to dedicate to bees, the living beings to which we all owe for life on our planet. Friday 25 June, at the Babbucce park in Tavullia and Wednesday 30 June at the Sanzio Theater in Urbino, at 9 pm, the entomologist and writer from Bologna Gianumberto Accinelli, together with the actress Marianna Morandi, will tell “The wonderful life of bees”. The scenic conference, based on the book of the same name written by the econarrator, will be the starting point to remember, with curious stories and perhaps little known to the public, the fundamental importance of these insects for the entire terrestrial ecosystem.

Two evenings to discover a world invisible to most but which can reveal so much about the health of the environment that surrounds us. Precisely for this reason Marche Multiservizi wanted to “ask for help” to bees to obtain information directly from them on environmental quality in the area of two waste disposal plants managed in the province of Pesaro-Urbino. The plants of Cà Asprete and Cà Lucio, two symbolic places for bee shows

The “Ape informs” biomonitoring: health and environment under control with bees

In addition to the monitoring required by the surveillance and control plans required by law, Marche Multiservizi has therefore committed itself to the “Ape informa” project, to provide a contribution on the analysis of the environmental context in which the two plant sites are located. Through the biomonitoring of bees, which become key bioindicators for the quality of the environment in the area surrounding the plants, it will be possible to obtain additional data and indications on safety in terms of environmental protection and the health of citizens living nearby.

In the two plants, an apiary consisting of five hives each has been placed, which are managed by a professional beekeeper, commissioned by Marche Multiservizi. The queen bees, one for each hive, were born in 2020 and now their five families, each made up of around 50,000 bees, are already regularly producing honey, pollen, propolis and wax. They are families of ligustic bees, of Italian origin.

Bees are creatures very sensitive to environmental changes caused by pollutants and are able to signal the onset of imbalances dangerous for biodiversity, ecosystem and human health at an early stage. The bee as a bioindicator therefore offers a lot of useful information on pollution, both in the short and long term, in the area where they live.

The “Ape informa” project is carried out in collaboration and under the scientific supervision of the University of Urbino (Department of Pure and Applied Sciences): bio-morphometric analyzes and veterinary medical checks will be carried out on the hives to verify the health and productivity of the bees , to sample honey, wax and other hive products. Under observation will be the toxic and polluting agents that can accumulate, consisting mainly of pesticides, heavy metals, toxic anions and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The information obtained will be the basis of an accurate eco-toxicological investigation, which will allow to know and quantify the possible effects of the anthropic impact on the environment, also through the study of the health status of the swarms.

“The University of Urbino once again puts its knowledge at the service of the territory – underlines the Magnificent Rector, Giorgio Calcagnini – collaborating with local, public and private actors. Knowing the state of health of the spaces in which our lives pass is fundamental, and undoubtedly allows us to promote and strengthen actions to support socially useful activities, in line with environmental protection plans and with the sustainable development objectives that each city or territory should establish “.
