Narrative card to optimize and simplify therapy management, improving adherence

Rome, April 20 (beraking latest news Health) – Reduce the distance between people with type 2 diabetes and their doctor for a simpler and more effective treatment path. This is the goal of the first Italian narrative medicine card dedicated to pathology, born thanks to the ‘DiMmi di +’ project, created with the unconditional contribution of Novo Nordisk. The sheet allows the co-construction of the illness story to guide the narration around some important themes in the treatment process, such as subjectivity, existential experiences, family and social relationships of the person with diabetes.

Narrative medicine – reads a note – is a medical approach that uses patients’ narratives in clinical practice through the story of the disease experience and the therapeutic benefit of dialogue with one’s doctor as an integral part of treatment. In this construction of the history of the disease, not only the patient is involved, but also the doctor must be able to identify the most important aspects for the treatment path, which is why the experience of the doctor and his relationship is also very important. with the patient. Narrative medicine does not want to replace “traditional” medicine based on scientific evidence, but represents a tool to be used to enhance its effects.

For the realization of the specific narrative card for diabetes, a group of 18 diabetologists attentive to the topic were involved in some meetings and, starting from the parallel folder developed by Columbia University that encourages health professionals to write the patient’s experience and their own experiences with respect to the care experience, they identified a series of narrative ideas suitable for the interview with patients with diabetes. The form is mainly aimed at patients with type 2 diabetes failing with oral therapy and who need a simplified treatment to obtain greater efficacy of treatment and greater adherence to therapy. The diabetes narrative sheet can be downloaded by diabetologists from the website www.dottorsmart.it.

“The medical aspects of diabetes are not separated from the personal aspects of the disease, starting with lifestyles and prevention. Just think – explains Donatella Bloise, referent of the Diabetology Center at the Spolverini hospital in Ariccia (Rome) – what behaviors and incorrect habits can compromise the management of the disease, leading to the onset of short- and long-term complications. Furthermore, in diabetes, as in all chronic diseases, therapeutic adherence is a fundamental aspect. Only the patient’s involvement in taking therapeutic decisions can lead to an effective treatment. The tool we tested in the DiMmidi + project also allows the physician to optimize time and save the economic resources of the healthcare facility “.

“In this moment where the pandemic underway has made it necessary to replace part of the visits to hospitals and clinics with the use of technology – observes Umberto Goglia, specialist in Endocrinology and metabolic diseases – it becomes even more important to find tools to ensure that remote management procedures do not distance the patient from the doctor. In this sense, narrative medicine can represent an important resource for simplifying the treatment process and guaranteeing therapeutic efficacy. The simplification of the treatment path, which is also the goal of the new drugs developed in recent years, is a very important element especially for those patients who are unable to obtain results from oral therapies, and this sheet represents a further tool in this direction. “.
