He conducted his research activity in the most prestigious international laboratories and collaborated in the discovery of the “God particle”

Alessia Tricomi, Professor of Experimental Physics of the Department of Physics and Astronomy “Ettore Majorana” of the University of Catania, was awarded the Nike Award, promoted by the Rotary Foundation, which identifies and rewards those Sicilian women who have distinguished themselves in the national field and international in its own discipline.

A well-deserved recognition for the teacher from Etna who, after graduating in Physics from the University of Catania, conducted her research activity in the most prestigious international laboratories, including CERN in Geneva, and also in the United States and Japan.

He has also collaborated in numerous experiments that have proved fundamental for the understanding of the Universe. Prof.ssa Tricomi, in fact, is among the authors of the discovery of the Higgs boson, the so-called “God particle”, for which, in 2012, the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Peter Higgs and Francois Englert.

Today at the Department of Physics and Astronomy he carries out fundamental research in the field of elementary particle physics in collaboration with CERN as part of the LHCb Experiment.

Since 2016 she has been director of the Sicilian Center for Nuclear Physics and Structure of Matter, the first woman to fill this role, and since 2019 she has held the prestigious positions of director of the INFN section of Catania and delegate of the rector for the coordination of the Third Mission, at Public Engagement and the City of Science. He is also president of Pint of Science Italy, the international scientific dissemination event, born in Great Britain, in which the most brilliant researchers discuss their latest research in the pub.

He has held various leadership roles in experiments at the LHC of CERN and has received numerous national and international awards for his research activity in the field of fundamental physics.
