The charging stations make their debut on the motorway

by admin

The one inaugurated now on the Autosole, in the Modenese Secchia Ovest service area, is only the first super fast charging station (with 300 kW of power) of the 100 that Autostrade per l’Italia plans to install along the entire infrastructure. national to guarantee refueling of e-cars in less than 20 minutes and clear the concept of green mobility from the city scale.

The second station will also be activated within a few days, located north of Rome, in the Flaminia Est area, which, like the first super-fast charging station in Modena, will be managed by the newco FreeToX, created by Aspi to ride the trend of innovative sustainable mobility. , which between now and 2024 foresees investments not only on electric charging stations (45 million euros on the plate) but also on LNG and hydrogen refueling stations for heavy vehicles and on the development of intermodal services and urban mobility, from car sharing platforms between individuals to logistics marketplaces for the exchange of spare capacity between carriers.

Alignment with European standards

The first step, that of the FreeToX electric columns (with 4-6 multi-client “dispensers” for each motorway service area with High Power Charger technology and connected to the digital platforms of the main charging providers active on the market), already has a precise written roadmap: the first 67 stations to be infrastructured along the entire motorway network have already been identified and approved by MIT, the goal is to reach 100 areas served, with an average distance between one charging area and another of approximately 50 km, equal to the interdistance of the service areas at European level to allow refueling times and duration of journeys similar to those with a traditional combustion engine. “We are working to rapidly build the country’s largest infrastructure for ultra-fast charging of electric vehicles, with an investment plan of over 45 million euros. We must make up for the delay that Italy suffers on the sustainable mobility front, ”explains the CEO of Autostrade per l’Italia, Roberto Tomasi.

Overtaking e-mobility

Electric, plug-in and hybrid cars exceeded registrations of petrol and diesel vehicles in the first four months of 2021. Market forecasts estimate that in 2030 there will be over 6 million full-electric vehicles in circulation in the country (today in Italy there are about 52 million cars in circulation and over 60% of vehicles are over ten years old). Hence the need to strongly accelerate the infrastructure of the motorway network with charging stations to push change. “Our industrial strategy – concludes the CEO – is in line with the objectives of the Recovery Fund and the Stability Law and not only aims to facilitate medium-long range travel on four wheels, considered a priority by many citizens following the pandemic, in a sustainable way, but to go beyond the motorway to develop sustainable and innovative solutions also at the service of goods and interconnections with cities, to facilitate sustainable mobility at 360 degrees ».

Beyond the highway

«We work with the logic of a start-up – says Giorgio Moroni, CEO of the new Aspi subsidiary, FreeToX – and together with the management of the latest generation electric columns we are developing other services that will have a significant impact on the lives of millions of travelers. I am thinking, for example, of the possibility of knowing in advance travel times with great precision thanks to the use of big data. This will also allow us to introduce a dynamic toll reimbursement system for users who will stay longer in the car due to the presence of maintenance sites. We also look with great attention to the new forms of integrated mobility that are proving to be increasingly important for large urban areas. With our technology and our services, also through targeted partnerships with local or national players, we have the ambition to make life easier for those traveling on the motorway and in the city ».
