ASG will provide magnets for a new proton cancer treatment system

The key points

  • First prototype in the world
  • Treatment of tumors with proton therapy
  • Magnets made in Italy

Asg Superconductors (a company of the Malacalza family) has obtained a contract from the German research center Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (Hzdr) to participate, supplying the part of magnets, in the realization, together with MagnetTx, of the first prototype in the world system for proton therapy (which attacks tumors with a beam of protons) capable of following, in real time, the movement of the tumor mass through magnetic resonance.

The value of the order has not been explicitly stated, however, according to experts in the sector, a project of this kind has a value of approximately 5 million euros and the magnetic part affects the total for about 2.5 million.

The solution that will be implemented in Germany combines a rotating magnetic resonance device (called Linac-Mr) which Asg had already worked on together with the Canadian startup Magnet Tx (emanation of the Alberta Health Services research center), with a proton beam developed at the National center for radiation research in oncology in Dresden.

Prototype

Through this system and its capabilities of real-time, high-contrast imaging for the organs of the chest, abdomen and pelvis, the team of Aswin Hoffmann, lead researcher Hzdr, intends to create the first prototype to be used later in the clinic.

“The peculiarity of this magnetic resonance scanner – spiea – is that it can be rotated around the patient with respect to the beam, allowing us to study the dosimetric and biological effects of the beam on the magnetic fields of magnetic resonance both perpendicular and parallel to the proton beam”.
